White gears

Hi to you all,

I decided to take the plunge and buy some of those white gears for the DCC600 off of eBay too.

Oh dear… all three they make intermittent noises during playback, and now the winding/rewinding sounds really awful, like a broken sewing machine. Not exactly an upgrade to the red gears…

How are your experiences?

Kind regards,
Eric

They should not be making sound during playback. Wind/rewind is noisier for sure. Adding grease often helps.

We made a video about testing the gears, but my guess is you already saw that one.

There are many bad suppliers out there. Mostly bad in my opinion.

I bought three white gears from a Chinese seller that someone else had good results with. I am not so lucky apparently.

Would you advise to put extra grease under and on the “teeth” of the wheels?

Usually there is oil substances remaining on the bottom, so no need for that unless it is dry.

I have read comments that grease on the gears reduces sound.

Not tried it, but just ordered some to test it out.

I tried using a bit of grease, but it does nothing: all three gears have the same intermittent “schlepping”. sound. I also tried them on different 2nd gen machines, all with the same results.
And after some time, the recorder just stops. Apparently the gear puts too much of a strain on the motor…

I did however notice that the bottom plate of the gear is a bit on the rough side, not smooth at all. Would it help to sand them?

This sound is not normal. Sanding down might help, but in my experience, if the gear does not behave within the first 5 minutes, it never will.

What I mean with that is, sometimes winding and rewinding first, smoothens everything out, like uneven residue f.i.

I had such sound when part of old gear was stuck in the plastic gear of motor pulley. Check the gear of motor pulley it it is clean and no parts of old gear are stuck there.
