Optical input on DCC 730

I have been recording from CD using the Optical input with out any issues.
Recently bought a Wiim Ultra Streamer/Dac.
When I plug the Optical cable in to the DCC 730 input and to the output on the Wiim. The light flashes on check connection on the Dcc, even though the ends are pushed home securely on both units.
Is this because I am trying to pair up two units that are 30 years apart in technology or have I missed something I should do. Works a treat with standard RCA. Any suggestions would be great.

All DCC recorders only accept stereo PCM at 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz. However, may modern digital outputs use different formats by default, e.g. Dolby Digital or DTS. They also often generate multi-channel output, especially DVD or BluRay players.

Fortunately many digital players/streamers can be configured to generate Stereo(!) PCM instead of Dolby or DTS. How to do that, depends on the device.

By the way, there’s a chance that even if you can make your device generate PCM, it still won’t record from it because it might have the copy protection bits set in such a way that the DCC recorder will refuse to record (it’ll say COPY INHIBIT or something). And in many cases, digital streamers don’t bother inserting track markers, even if you play a CD.

It’s unfortunate that not that many people have any devices that can record digital audio anymore, and the makers of the devices just can’t be bothered catering to them anymore.

To extend the ideas from Jac I would like to add that it can be in a way that your optical output from the DAC still streams 44.1 or 48kHz but quantizing is a bit higher than DCC730 can accept. i.e 24bit.

you can check if your DAC can be setup for a lower bit rate, ie like normal 16bit of CDs
