Just introducing myself on the forum. I am a fan of all things tape. I only recently discovered DCC on a YouTube video from MendItMark (love that show) where he was working on the Bose prototype that DCC Museum had. Right, so two cool things discovered in one video. First that DCC was a thing and second there are some brilliant people dedicated to preserving it. As a result of seeing the video and reading a bit more about DCC I decided why not and bought RadioShack Optimus unit off of eBay described as non-working so we’ll see how far I get on with it. I recently resurrected a DAT player so fingers crossed I can produce similiar results with this DCC unit. It sounds like from my readings here that straight away re-capping will be in order and most likely belts which are not a big deal. Being a Gen I it sounds like the units weren’t all in with SMD at that point so that could make it more serviceable.
In any case, I am excited to get into it. I was a little disappointed to learn that older analog tapes eat the tape heads of the DCC. Part of the ‘cool’ factor immediately gone.
Where are people buying blanks these days? I know a company bought the old BASF equipment and is producing new R2R tapes. Someone must be making new blanks if DCC Museum is able to release new products.
